Low Testosterone
Understanding Testosterone
Testosterone is a naturally occurring hormone that plays a major role in male development and wellbeing. It influences characteristics such as sex drive, facial and body hair, voice depth, muscle and bone strength, and sperm production.
Because this hormone supports so many aspects of a man’s vitality, changes in testosterone levels can influence energy, stamina, focus, and even self-confidence.
When Testosterone Levels Shift
Some men notice changes that may be associated with lower hormone balance, such as:
Reduced body hair (especially on the lower leg)
Irritability or mood changes
Difficulty concentrating
Fatigue or low motivation
Increased body fat
Decreased libido
Reduced muscle tone
Changes in work performance
In younger males, hormone imbalance can affect physical development, such as facial hair growth or voice deepening.
High testosterone levels can also create challenges. Too much of any hormone can disrupt the body’s natural balance and may contribute to issues like acne, sleep changes, or mood swings.
Supporting Hormone Balance Naturally
Lifestyle choices can play a role in overall wellbeing.
Movement: Regular physical activity supports energy and confidence. Start with something enjoyable and sustainable — walking, biking, or recreational sports.
Breathing: Deep, intentional breathing helps reduce stress and supports oxygen flow for muscle and metabolic health.
Nutrition: Eating nutrient‑dense foods — lean proteins, food botanically considered to be fruit (squash, tomatoes, strawberries, bananas, cucumbers, etc.), and healthy fats — helps the body function optimally.
Hydration: Staying well‑hydrated supports joint comfort, mental clarity, and physical performance.
These habits don’t replace medical care but can complement a healthy lifestyle.
Medical Treatment Awareness
"In other words, when you take TRT, your brain senses high testosterone and stops stimulating the testes, leading to reduced or zero natural testosterone and sperm production." -Bruce R. Gilbert, MD, PhD, Testosterone Replacement Therapy Aftermath: What Happens When You Stop TRT?
Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT) is a medical procedure performed by licensed healthcare professionals for clinically diagnosed hormone deficiency. It has potential benefits and risks, including prostate cancer, BPH, and breast cancer. Decisions about TRT should always be made with a qualified physician who can evaluate individual needs.
Natural Compounds Often Discussed
Some men explore herbal or nutritional supplements as part of their wellness routine. Research on these options varies, and supplements are not regulated like medications.
Ashwagandha --- Studies have shown a significant increase in testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone-sulphate (DHEA-S). Men between the ages of 40 - 70 were given 600 mg (21 mg withanolide glycosides) over the course of an eight week trial. The results were sustain during the test trial. It was noted that longer use or perhaps higher amounts of ashwagandha may have yielded greater results.
Saw Palmetto --- known as the Man's Tonic, saw palmetto has traditionally been used as a tonic for the genitourinary system. Historically, it has been used for erectile dysfunction that has occurred as a result of nervous exhaustion. Herbalist often recommend saw palmetto for inflammation of the urinary system, BPH, cystitis, and chronic prostatitis. It has also been used as an aphrodisiac.
Tongkat Ali — used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine for depression, fatigue, low libido, and lethargy. Studies have shown tongkat ali has the potention for balancing cortisol and testosterone and improving the psychological state for those facing modern stesses.
Boron — studies have shown this mineral helps the body use testosterone and other hormones efficiently and prevents prostate and other types of cancer.
Horny Goat Weed (Epimedium) — has been used for centures in Traditional Chinese Medicine as an aphrodisiac to address erectile dysfunction. Herbalists have also used it to restore circulation and balance hormones.
Anyone considering supplements should consult a healthcare professional, especially if they take medications or have existing health conditions.
Key Takeaway
Hormone balance is part of a bigger picture of male health — movement, nutrition, rest, and mindset all play a role. Understanding these connections helps men make informed, confident choices about their wellbeing.
